Pakistani-American college student Naz Khan, who lives with his parents in Queens, borrows his father's taxi to drive into Manhattan to attend a party. He never makes it.
Before the long night is over, shaped by a chance meeting, drugs, alcohol and sex, Naz is detained by police as a suspect in the death of a young woman, Andrea.
Homicide Detective Box questions Naz about his 'night of' with the victim. His blood-stained clothes and a DNA sample are collected, the scratches on his back photographed, his bloodied hands fingerprinted.
Meeting with another arrestee, attorney John Stone, a "precinct trawler," notices Naz in a holding cell. Though representing clients accused of serious crimes isn't what Stone does, he takes down information from Naz, advises him to stop talking to the police, and gets him his phone call.
Naz calls home and tells his stunned parents he's been arrested for murder.
