Having arrived in Winterfell, Jaime Lannister breaks the news to Daenerys that Cersei lied about joining the fight against the dead and has procured the Golden Company for her own purposes. Both Daenerys and Sansa agree Jaime should not be trusted and deserves to be punished. Jaime refuses to apologize for his past deeds – he's caught off guard when Bran quotes a familiar phrase – but promises he is committed to their cause. Brienne of Tarth vouches for Jaime's honor, convincing Sansa to allow him to stay.

"The things we do for love." – Bran Stark

Arya stops by the blacksmith to ask Gendry what to expect from the enemy. She makes it clear she is a force to be reckoned with and reminds Gendry to get started on making the weapon she requested.

Jaime apologizes to Bran for crippling him, but Bran calmly states he isn't angry, nor has he told anyone what happened – Jaime won't be able to fight if he's a dead man.

The Lannister brothers meet in the Winterfell courtyard. Jaime and Tyrion discuss Daenerys, Cersei's pregnancy, and the probability that they will die in the fight to come. Jaime is distracted when he sees Brienne amongst the preparing soldiers. He admits he is not the fighter he once was but asks if he might serve under her command. She agrees.

"You always knew exactly what she was. And you loved her anyway." – Tyrion Lannister

Displeased with Tyrion's advice to trust Cersei, Daenerys threatens to find a new Hand. Jorah voices his belief that Tyrion was the right choice for the role, and suggests she forgive his past mistakes.

Dany attempts to make nice with Sansa, who also advocates for Tyrion – assigning blame to Daenerys for believing Cersei. The Dragon Queen focuses on what the two women have in common: ruling in a man's world, and their love for Jon. They are connecting until Sansa broaches the topic of the North, and what will happen to her domain once Daenerys sits on the Iron Throne. Their conversation is interrupted by the arrival of Theon Greyjoy, who tells Daenerys of Yara's plans to take back the Iron Islands. He addresses only Sansa when he asks to fight for Winterfell. They embrace.

"I want to fight for Winterfell, Lady Sansa, if you'll have me." – Theon Greyjoy

Jon Snow is happy to learn that Tormund, Beric, Edd and the other Night's Watchmen and wildlings have arrived at Winterfell. They explain to Jon what happened at the Last Hearth and warn they only have until morning before the Army of the Dead arrives at their gates

"If we forget where we've been and what we've done. We're not men anymore…if I wanted to erase the world of men, I'd start with you." – Samwell Tarly

Jon and the group plan for battle. Bran volunteers to be the bait to draw the Night King into a vulnerable position. Theon volunteers to stand guard beside Bran. Daenerys and Jon plan to ride dragons, though no one, not even Bran, is sure dragonfire will kill the Night King. Tyrion is offended when Daenerys insists he remain in the crypts with Sansa, Missandei and the northern women and children, but acquiesces to his queen's command. After the meeting, Tyrion asks Bran to share his story with him. Everyone is in for a long night of sleeplessness and waiting.

Missandei struggles to connect with the Northerners. Grey Worm promises her that once the war is over, and Daenerys is Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, he will take her back to Naath and protect her and her people.

Edd joins Samwell and Jon on the battlements. Sam is adamant he helps, rather than hide in the crypts. They remember their fallen brothers from the Night's Watch and wait for another fight.

Jaime and Tyrion sit by the fire drinking and chuckling at how outraged their father would be to know they were dying fighting for the Starks. They are soon joined by Brienne, Podrick Payne, Davos and Tormund.

Arya begins her evening on the battlements with the Hound and Beric Dondarrion, but quickly realizes it's not how she wants to spend her potential last night alive. She leaves them on the battlements. Arya goes to find Gendry. He delivers her new weapon – a bow staff with dragonglass blades – and tells her what happened with Melisandre, and that he is Robert Baratheon's bastard son. Kissing him, Arya decides she wants to know what it's like to be with someone before she dies. They sleep together.

"I'm not the Red Woman. Take your own bloody pants off." – Arya Stark

Tormund is shocked to learn Brienne is not a knight, adding that if he were king he'd knight her immediately. Jaime explains that any knight can make another. He tells Brienne to kneel and recites the appropriate words. Ser Brienne of Tarth rises, the first female knight of the Seven Kingdoms. It is a moment of joy in a night of fear.

Sam sees Jorah and Lyanna Mormont arguing over her role in the battle. She refuses to sit in the crypts and leaves it at that. Sam offers his family sword, Heartsbane, to Jorah.

Pod sings "Jenny's Song" as everyone awaits the rising sun. The group stares into the fire; Sam lies with Gilly and baby Sam in their bed; Sansa and Theon sit together; Arya lies awake next to a sleeping Gendry; Missandei passionately kisses Grey Worm as he leaves to get into position; Jorah mounts his horse.

"If it were true, it would make you the last male heir of House Targaryen." – Daenerys Targaryen

Surprised that Jon has been avoiding her, Dany finds Jon in the Winterfell crypts gazing at Lyanna Stark's statue. Dany voices confusion over Rhaegal's supposed brutality to Lyanna, as she had only heard wonderful things about her brother. Jon chooses this moment to tell Dany the truth – that Rhaegal and Lyanna were married, and he is their son. Dany slowly accepts this, realizing what it means for her claim to the Iron Throne. His silent response is interrupted by three horn blasts: the dead are here.
