6 Cast Reveals from the Curb Red Carpet
Larry David and his fellow Curb cast members came out to the red carpet at SVA Theater in New York City to celebrate the show’s return. With Larry, JB Smoove, Susie Essman, Jeff Garlin and Cheryl Hines all in a single room, six years of hiatus fell away like no time at all. Here are some of the cast’s important takeaways in the lead-up to the Season 9 premiere this Sunday at 10 PM.
1. Returning to Curb felt like “home.”
Asked what it was like coming back to set after six years, Susie Essman (who plays the notoriously foul-mouthed and vibrant Susie Greene) had a heartfelt reply: “It was the place I knew I was meant to be in. It felt so natural. It felt like I was home.”
2. They’re back to make you laugh.
Larry David’s goal for Season 9 is simple. In his own words, “I just want the episodes to be funny and people to enjoy it.” Essman added, “The world is falling the f**k apart! We need Larry.”
3. Curb is like a good cigar – according to JB Smoove.
In signature “Leon”-form, JB Smoove was more than ready to celebrate the end of Curb’s hiatus: “Six years is the perfect amount of time to be gone. It’s like a good cigar. You told your wife you were going to stop smoking cigars. You know what happens? After some time, you say, ‘You know what?’ I’m going to celebrate tonight. I’m going to smoke this damn cigar. Curb is the best cigar in the world!”
Let the record show, Smoove had a cigar at the ready for the red carpet festivities.
4. Season 9 will be pretty, pretty, pretty good.
Larry David said he had no worries about kicking off production. “It’s not the set that I was concerned about, it’s more what’s on paper – the writing.” Rest assured, “I’ve done this long enough to know when I’ve done a good show.”
5. Six years of material in the making.
A long hiatus means a whole lot of comedy gold stored up for the new season. Longtime Curb director David Steinberg teased upcoming storylines: “The goal is to push farther. I guarantee you laughter... unless you’re an imbecile.” Larry David offered, “I’ve always taken to writing ideas down, so perhaps I had a little more in the bank this year than in previous seasons.”
6. New season. Same social assassin.
Now that he’s back in the business of “social assassination,” the Curb cast had some thoughts on how to best use his services. JB Smoove cut right to the chase: “It’s gotta be the guy that goes into the bathroom and walks out without washing his hands OR the person who eats the last piece of pie.” Susie Essman had other ideas, stating, “I don’t need Larry to take out a hit, because I’m quite capable of doing it myself.”
Meanwhile, asked if he’s developed any new pet peeves since the last season, Larry David responded: “That’s a good question. If I come up with an answer, I’ll let you know.”
