TV-MA | 52 MIN

Written by Elena Ferrante, Francesco Piccolo, Laura Paolucci and Saverio Costanzo

Elena's father takes her to see the courthouse where he works and brags to his colleagues that she's enrolled in high school. He teaches her how to get herself to school and she sees the sea for the first time. When she learns Lila has already been studying Greek, Elena vows to stay ahead of Lila, academically and romantically.

At a neighborhood party, Lila is pursued by the boys in attendance including Marcello Solara and Pasquale Peluso. Lila dances with Pasquale, whose father is in jail for Don Achille's death, but Michele Solara has Pasquale thrown out so Marcello can dance with her. Lila eschews a parade of suitors vying for her affection, choosing instead to focus on her ambitions in the shoe shop.

Gino, the pharmacist's son, asks Elena to go steady with him, and she says yes, even though she's more interested in Nino Sarratore — Donato the poet's son.

Promising a better future for the neighborhood, Stefano Carracci invites the Grecos and Cerullos to celebrate New Year's Eve. Stefano toasts the neighborhood and the Pelusos, vowing to move on from the past. They set off fireworks on the roof and things escalate quickly when the Solaras begin firing both fireworks and guns directly at the Carracci crowd. Rino furiously returns fire, showing Lila a different side of him.
