Kanye fans perked up.
The all-piano cover of Kanye West’s “Runaway” was recorded by Westworld composer Ramin Djawadi, and it didn’t take long for music blogs to notice. Women led the charge.
IndieWire tracked the female-led evolution of the campaign, which kicked off with a cryptic Twitter message from Delos board employee Charlotte Hale (Tessa Thompson). Cut to the official ad where Maeve Millay (Thandie Newton) is seen leading a herd of angry bull hosts while Dolores draws up plans for burning their world “to the ground.”
Jonathan Nolan tricked his brother.
The Westworld co-creator allowed his brother Christopher Nolan, director of The Dark Knight and Dunkirk, to preview the ad. “My brother said that at first, he thought the ad was a car commercial,” Nolan told Entertainment Weekly in a post-Super Bowl interview. “And I said, ‘Exactly!’” For Nolan's full breakdown on the spot, head over to EW.
There’s more to this game.
After the ad aired, fans were treated to a 90-second version on HBO.com and YouTube. Within minutes of being made available, superfans on Reddit and trade reporters alike broke down each moment, frame by frame. Though there are already theories on what’s in store for viewers come April, there seems to be one general consensus: It’s going to be chaos.
