Westworld Season 2 Finale: Explained
By Olivia Armstrong
What door? A lot happened in the last episode of the second season of Westworld. Here?s what you need to know about ?The Passenger? and what it means for the remaining players.
Hosts and humans converged in the Valley Beyond, Logan returned (kind of), and Dolores took on a new, albeit familiar, form. Here?s what happened in the epic 90-minute Westworld Season 2 finale ?The Passenger? ? and how to make sense of it all. For a detailed explainer, check out the full episode guide.
Logan is an avatar of the system itself.
There is much more to the troubled son of James Delos, whose virtual form lives within a simulation of Westworld, the Delos Mansion and the library filled with data from all guests from frequented the parks. It turns out that, through Ford, Bernard told Logan to give Dolores access to the system, thus giving her a ?competitive advantage? in the outside world.
Breaking down the Forge and The Door and the Valley Beyond.
Dolores has been making her way to the Valley Beyond all season while Akecheta has been on the hunt for The Door. Recently, you?ve heard about the Forge. Here?s what all that means in a nutshell:
The Forge is the area of Protagoras Facility: 01, where Dolores and Bernard can access the system. After gaining access to the system, a new server allows The Door to open in the Valley Beyond, where hosts can enter, leave behind their bodies and have their minds live on in the Forge. Humans are unable to see The Door and thus cannot enter. Dolores sees this ?virtual eden? as another false promise from Ford and tries to destroy the Forge.
Dolores is still Dolores, just in Hale?s body.
Dolores doesn?t want to live on forever in a simulation ? no matter how perfect or indistinguishable from reality it may be. She wants the real thing. With help from Bernard, her mind has been uploaded to a printed body of Charlotte Hale.
In a flashback, Dolores, in a copy of Hale?s body, shoots the real Hale. In the present, Dolores boards a rescue boat out of the park. She?s smuggled five pearls in her purse. At the end, we see Dolores has reprinted herself and Bernard from her memories. There is also someone wearing Charlotte Hale?s body.
The Man in Black is in what?s left of his world.
After the credits, the Man in Black steps off an elevator in the Forge. He sees a host version of his daughter Emily. She walks him to a location similar to where James Delos was held and questioned in Season 2 Episode 4 ?The Riddle of the Sphinx.? The Man in Black started Delos? secret project to try and find immortality. He?s found it, but is now being tested for ?fidelity.?
