    The Searcher – Part 1

Part 1 details Elvis' early life in Tupelo, MS and Memphis, TN, where he soaked in the gospel music of both black and white communities; his initial encounter with Sun Studios producer Sam Phillips, who teamed him with Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black to record the seminal hit "That's All Right"; his early years of touring, mostly in the South, which burnished his reputation as a rising young voice in rock and roll; his decision to sign with a national label, RCA Records, after Colonel Tom Parker bought out his contract from Phillips; his unprecedented rise to fame over a single year (1956), with a string of hit records and memorable performances on The Steve Allen Show (singing to a hound dog) and The Ed Sullivan Show (shot from the waist up); his desire (long held) to break into movies, and his success in early films like Love Me Tender and Jailhouse Rock; the death of his beloved mother Gladys just after Elvis had purchased Graceland, a Memphis estate; and his two-year exodus in Germany (1958-1960) after being drafted by the Army, during which time he met his future wife, Priscilla Beaulieu.
