Played by Jonathan Groff
Jonathan Groff lent his voice to the character of rugged mountain climber Kristoff in the animated comedy-adventure Frozen in 2013. He can be seen in Alex Lombard’s short mystery, Sophie, a story about ironic love in the big city.
Groff made his big screen debut as Michael Lang, the legendary concert promoter and co-creator of the famed Woodstock Music and Art Festival, in Ang Lee’s Taking Woodstock. Previously, Groff was seen on screen in The Conspirator and the independent drama, Twelve-Thirty. Groff is perhaps best known to audiences as Jesse St. James in hit musical comedy series, Glee, and he has also appeared in Boss and The Good Wife.
A young veteran of the theater, Groff originated the role of Melchior Gabor in the Tony Award-winning musical Spring Awakening. Groff’s role as the sharp, searching teen earned him a 2007 Theatre World Award, in addition to Tony, Drama Desk, and Drama League Award nominations. Following his acclaimed Spring Awakening’ run, Groff transitioned into the famed role of Claude in The Public Theater’s revival of Hair, the seminal rock musical of the 1960s.
Furthermore, Groff also tackled difficult roles in two Off-Broadway plays by acclaimed playwright/screenwriter Craig Lucas, for which he was the recipient of a Village Voice Obie Award for Outstanding Performance – Prayer for My Enemy, directed by Bartlett Sher at Playwrights Horizons and The Singing Forest at the Public Theatre.
Prior to making his West End debut at the Noel Coward Theatre in the revival of Ira Levin’s Deathtrap, Groff starred as Dionysus, the God of Wine, in the Public Theater’s summer staging of Euripides’ The Bacchae, helmed by director JoAnne Akalaitis and featuring original music by Philip Glass. Subsequently, Groff starred on stage in the MCC Theater production of Jeff Talbot’s provocative Off-Broadway drama The Submission, directed by Walter Bobbie, and he most recently joined the Donmar Warehouse production of the Tony Award-winning Red, directed by Michael Grandage, at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles.
Groff is a native of Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
