What is Sanctum?
Sanctum was a series of exclusive virtual reality events, which transported Lovecraft Country fans into a world inspired by the show. Sanctum hosted three live events for 100 influencers throughout the season with guest voiceover performances by Jurnee Smollett, Jonathan Majors, Courtney B. Vance, and Michael Kenneth Williams. Each event took place on VRChat, an application that allowed guests to talk and interact with each other in real-time within the environment.
Users who weren't able to participate within the social VR space could watch the livestream on YouTube and also interact in real-time, solving riddles to trigger spells that directly impacted the experience.
Users took a stroll through a whimsical garden and experienced afrofuturist art installations by David Alabo, Devan Shimoyama and Adeyemi Adegbesan, exploring a unique vision of Black beauty, power, and life. They were also challenged to participate in an escape room, guided by a voiceover of Jonathan Majors, as they worked together to find a few key props featured in the show to exit that part of the experience.
Sanctum participants experienced a live poetry performance inspired by the words of James Baldwin, adapted by Lovecraft Country writer Shannon Houston, and performed by Jurnee Smollett. Users were also tasked with walking across a plank without falling off, similar to what the characters experienced in the show.
Guests celebrated the season finale of Lovecraft Country with an out-of-this-world musical performance by the one and only Janelle Monáe. They were also able to take a guided tour of the reliquary room that was led by the voiceover of Michael Kenneth Williams, where he gave guests insight into the props featured in the show.
