What is Sanctum?

Sanctum was a series of exclusive virtual reality events, which transported Lovecraft Country fans into a world inspired by the show. It hosted three live events throughout the season with guest voiceover performances by Jurnee Smollett, Jonathan Majors, Courtney B. Vance, and Michael Kenneth Williams. Each event took place on VRChat, an application that allowed guests to talk and interact with each other in real-time within the environment.

Users who weren't able to participate within the social VR space could watch the livestream on YouTube and also interact in real-time, solving riddles to trigger spells that directly impacted the experience.

Garden of Eden

Users took a stroll through a whimsical garden and experienced afrofuturist art installations by David Alabo, Devan Shimoyama ‌and Adeyemi Adegbesan, exploring a unique vision of Black beauty, power, and life.

An American Dream

Sanctum participants experienced a live poetry performance inspired by the words of James Baldwin, adapted by Lovecraft Country writer Shannon Houston, and performed by Jurnee Smollett.

Music of the Cosmos

Guests celebrated the season finale of Lovecraft Country with an out-of-this-world musical performance by the one and only Janelle Monáe.
