Emma Thompson Joins Years & Years

The Oscar winner will play a charismatic politician in the upcoming series from Russell T Davies (Doctor Who).

Two-time Oscar winner Emma Thompson (The Children Act, Late Night) joins Doctor Who writer Russell T Davies? upcoming limited series Years & Years.

As Britain is rocked by unstable political, economic and technological advances, members of the Lyons family converge on one crucial night in 2019. Over the next 15 years, the twists and turns of their everyday lives are explored as we find out if this ordinary family could change the world.

Thompson stars as Vivienne Rook, an outspoken celebrity turned political figure whose controversial opinions divide the nation. She?s a new breed of politician: an entertainer, a rebel, and a trickster, her rise to power leads into an unknown future. Rory Kinnear (Spectre), T?Nia Miller (Obey), Russell Tovey (Quantico), Jessica Hynes (Paddington 2), Ruth Madeley (Cold Feet) and Anne Reid (Last Tango in Halifax) also star.

Kinnear will play Stephen Lyons, a financial advisor and the family?s peacekeeper who is married to Celeste, played by Miller, an ambitious and opinionated accountant. Tovey stars as Daniel Lyons, a housing officer and Stephen?s brother. Their sister, Edith, played by Jessica Hynes, is radical, dangerous, calculating ? and leads a secret life. Ruth Madeley will play the Lyons? pregnant sister Rosie while Anne Reid presides as the imperial grandmother Muriel.

The six-part drama hails from RED Production Company in co-production with BBC One, HBO and CANAL+. It marks the ninth collaboration between acclaimed screenwriter Russell T Davies and RED?s Nicola Shindler, the producers behind Queer As Folk, Casanova, Cucumber, Banana, Bob & Rose and The Second Coming.

Years & Years is commissioned for BBC One by Piers Wenger. International Distribution is led by STUDIOCANAL. The series is written and executive produced by Russell T Davies. Nicola Shindler and Michaela Fereday serve as executive producers for RED Production Company, along with Lucy Richer for BBC and producer Karen Lewis (Happy Valley). Simon Cellan Jones (Jessica Jones, Boardwalk Empire) will direct and executive produce.
