THE IRON ANNIVERSARY
Top 10 Most Beloved Game of Thrones Duos
In April 2011, 10 years ago, viewers got their first look at Westeros, and met the Starks, Lannisters and Targaryens on the HBO Original Game of Thrones. To celebrate the Iron Anniversary, we sent out a raven, asking you, loyal viewers, to help pick most beloved duos from the series. Curated from nearly 45,000 votes, here are the results of the Choosing.
10. Brienne and Podrick
“Nothing’s more hateful than failing to protect the one you love.” Podrick and Brienne were just one of those duos who you had to root for. He proved himself time and time again as a fiercely loyal squire, and Brienne rewarded that loyalty by training him to fight, and eventually helped him become a Kingsguard knight. One of the greater success stories on this list.
9. Jaime and Cersei
Jaime and Cersei did not always see eye to eye. He even walked away from her when she took things too far after she refused to help fight the Night King and his army. But there’s no one else Cersei trusted more than Jaime, and their love for each other and their children always brought them back together.
8. Daenerys and Tyrion
With his keen political intuition and determination to bring down his family, and her proven ability to effectively lead an army, it was clear that a partnership between Tyrion and Daenerys would be advantageous. The moment Dany chose Tyrion as her Hand was one for the history books — even if his name was left out of them.
7. Daenerys and Missandei
Daenerys experienced so much loss and betrayal during the first few seasons, which was why it was so great to see a friendship blossom between her and her trusted adviser. We could tell it was the beginning of a strong friendship when Daenerys said, “All men must die, but we are not men.”
6. Jon Snow and Ygritte
Few moments in Thrones make us smile as much as the scene where Ygritte plays at swooning in Jon’s arms. Jon and Ygritte’s forbidden love story was a fan-favorite from day one, a bright spot in a show that could be dark and full of terrors. It was painful to see the relationship end, even if it seemed inevitable, but they’ll always have that cave, and we’ll always have, “You know nothing, Jon Snow.”
5. Jon Snow and Daenerys
It was one of the moments we’d all been waiting for, and when Jon and Daenerys finally met they had both been through a lot. What started as a sizing up of one another eventually became an alliance, and then love, but nothing prepared them for the nature of their bond: a shared lineage, and with it a new claim to the Iron Throne. What was it Ramsay once said? “If you think this has a happy ending, you haven’t been paying attention.” Truer words were never spoken…
4. Sam and Jon Snow
While he was not a great fighter, Samwell Tarly became quite a knowledgeable and valuable confidant and friend to Jon. As members of the Night's Watch, they shared an unbreakable bond that proved beneficial for both men and the collective realm.
3. Tyrion and Bronn
Tyrion and Bronn's relationship was more transactional than a natural friendship, with Bronn offering Tyrion protection while the latter ensured he had financial security. They may not have been the most loyal people in the kingdom, but they sure had one of the most amusing dynamics.
2. Arya and The Hound
Despite being on Arya’s kill list for murdering her friend, The Hound became somewhat of a mentor to the young woman and helped train her to be a stone-cold survivor — maybe a little too well. They had a complicated relationship, but developed a mutual respect for each other we all loved to watch.
1. Brienne and Jaime
“All my life men like you have sneered at me, and all my life I've been knocking men like you into the dust.” That’s how it started, but the friendship and respect these two developed over time was undeniable. They showed up for each other time and time again, both in combat and emotional support. When Jaime knighted Brienne before the battle against the Night King, not only was Brienne’s greatest dream realized, but it was a wish fulfilled for our viewers everywhere.
