Join the 'Game of Thrones' With Immersive Technology

With over 500 days between the Season 7 finale and the Season 8 premiere, HBO wanted to give fans the opportunity to dive into where the story left off — and prepare to “fight for the living” against Westeros’ biggest threat: The Army of the Dead.

Ahead of the highly-anticipated final season, Game of Thrones utilized the latest innovations in VR, AR and mixed reality to allow fans to experience Westeros like never before. These digital experiences blended with the real world at South by Southwest, retail stores across America and through mobile phones. To celebrate the Season 8 trailer, GoT launched the first ever brand Instagram AR effect. Leading into premiere, the stunning VR experience allowed fans to relive the epic Battle at the Frozen Lake. Fans faced the White Walkers again in Magic Leap mixed reality. On premiere day alone, GoT’s Snapchat AR lens garnered over 27 million impressions and drove millions to tune in to the epic final season.

The Dead Must Die: a Magic Leap Encounter

The state of the art experience had industry leaders talking.

Even more impressive was the virtual reality experience that takes viewers beyond the wall.

There’s no edge of the screen to be protected by, and Magic Leap notes that it’s scary to see a White Walker, but “much scarier when it sees you.”

The Game of Thrones scenario reminded me somewhat of one of the first-gen HoloLens games -- but with a field of view closer to that of the second-gen HoloLens.

Two exciting bits one news here. One: A Game of Thrones AR experience is on its way to Magic Leap. Two: You might actually get to see it yourself.
