The Euphoria Cast Feels Something at the ‘Surreal’ Premiere

BY MARISSA BLANCHARD

Although Euphoria focuses on high school students, its themes of growing up and discovering one’s identity are universal. Held at the Pacific Cinerama Dome, the premiere’s excitement was palpable as guests and actors arrived and walked the purple carpet. The young cast, including Zendaya, Jacob Elordi, Sydney Sweeney and more, reflected on what they learned over the course of production and how they hope audiences react to the gritty pilot.

The cast reacted to the big day finally being here. “I’m going to be honest with you — it’s terrifying,” revealed Zendaya, who plays Rue, a teenager struggling with anxiety and addiction. “I hope people are moved in a positive way. I hope they feel for these characters and appreciate them.”

First-time actor Hunter Schaffer, who plays Jules, shared that the experience had been, “absolutely life changing. Delving into this art practice has changed the way I move through my emotions, and my head space and the way I interact with people.”

She summed up the feelings of the night by comparing it to a pregnancy. “It’s been growing and we’ve been preparing to have this baby,” she laughed. “Our water broke and we might not be ready — but it’s happening.”

“It feels really f**king surreal,” added executive producer Sam Levinson. “I hope people are moved by it and excited about where the story is going to go.”

Growing Together

The show’s budding stars shared how the experience filming has impacted them. Jacob Elordi talked about how his intense role of Nate, a volatile young man grappling with his emotions and idea of masculinity, has impacted him: “I changed as a person entirely. I flipped around and went to the bottom of the barrel and came back up — I’ve learned so much.”

Most importantly, the actors supported each other throughout the filming process. “I’ve never worked on a project that’s lasted this long,” said Maude Apatow, who plays Lexi, Rue’s childhood best friend. “It’s been a real learning experience for me — and most of us. It’s been a challenge for sure.”

Sharp Objects actor Sydney Sweeney, opened up about playing Cassie and being part of the show overall: “It has been very therapeutic for me. I’ve learned how to love myself more.”

Season 1 of Euphoria premieres June 16 at 10 p.m.
