In episode 207, we see how much Selina trusts and depends on Gary, sending him out to recover her trash with its secret, possibly damning, contents.
It's a desperate trust. I don't think she truly trusts him, but when it comes to demeaning activity like retrieving trash and breaking up with her boyfriend, Gary's her guy.
We know from last season that Gary would take a sneeze bullet for Selina...how far does that loyalty go?
In his eyes, it goes pretty far. He would give up everything, but I don't think she'd even give up a meal for him. He's always ready with a needle and thread, always has a lint brush ready - anything she needs, he will have it - and she could just care less. She just screams profanities at him and all he hears is unicorns and rainbows - he doesn't actually hear anything that's coming out of her mouth. He sees her in a completely ethereal and angelic light.
It really takes a special kind of person to be someone's punching bag.
There are layers and layers and layers of woundedness in Gary [laughs]. He could benefit from 24/7 therapy. There are definitely some childhood wounds that are living themselves out with Selina.
At least they're focused neuroses.
Oh yeah. At least he's proactive about it. I think with everything that's going on in Gary's life, he has a plan. Selina is his identity. God forbid the day something happens to Selina or she loses her job. I don't know what he would do. He'd be working at a cat shelter somewhere.
Do you think that maybe his feelings for the Veep come from a more romantic place?
[Laughs] Maybe? Definitely. He's a step away from having an altar to Selina in his house. A lot of photos in one spot, some candles, a bench...
Speaking of romance, we get to see Gary with a girlfriend this season.
Who's just as dominating as Selina, by the way. Gary goes from one dominating woman to the next. I was very surprised when Dana came into the picture because Selina's his number one priority, and to be honest, will continue to be his number one priority. He enjoys Dana's company, but it's gonna take lot for her to trump Selina.
How do you think they met?
I don't think Gary had any involvement in the introduction or the relationship. The fact is, he oozes vulnerability - he's just walking prey. She needed somebody to dominate and Gary was willing. Selina's his office woman who takes care of him and Dana is the Selina at home.
What would you like to see the show explore with Gary in future episodes?
I'd like to meet Gary's mother. There's a lot rooted in that. And putting Gary's mother and Selina together - I'd like to see how that would go. There'd probably be a lot of similarities.
Speaking of mothers, any similarities between Selina and another overbearing mother you've worked with in the past?
[Laughs] Oh yeah. The thing that's great about Gary - unlike Buster, who would go into a complete state of paralysis anytime he was afraid - Gary steps up to the plate. He'll do whatever's needed to take care of his woman. He sees himself as her protector. I think Buster could use a few lessons from Gary.
If I were President, my pet cause would be: I can't even go there. Just the thought of being president brings me immediate anxiety.
What's in my Leviathan: I think Gary would be incredibly ashamed of what's in Tony Hale's Leviathan, because it's probably just water bottles and chap stick.
Unlike Gary's new Leviathan, the best gift I ever received was: My wife just screamed out, "Your child!" I'd say that's the best answer.
_________ was the worst job I ever had: I worked in Panama City Beach once on a dinner boat where we'd take people out on an island to find shells. The morning of, I'd have to go and throw out the shells for people to find, and then have to pretend later that I'd never seen them before.
Gary's brings Danish or tea to comfort Selina. What comforts me is: Not only does he bring those to her, he makes those. He stays up the night before and rolls out that dough for those perfect Danishes. I'm not gonna lie, I think I would enjoy some of Gary's baked goods.
