and Writer David Simon
On October 12, the "gripping" (Washington Post) and "scorching" (TV Guide) series THE
WIRE makes its highly anticipated DVD debut with the release The Wire: The Complete First
Season. Exposing the endless war on drugs in the streets of Baltimore, The Wire: The Complete
First Season will be available exclusively on DVD and features 13 episodes packaged in a five-disc
set, arriving in video stores nationwide just in time for the premiere of the third season on HBO.
THE WIRE tells the story of a single sprawling police investigation concerning the drug culture in
Baltimore from the point of view of both the police and their targets. The series captures a universe where
easy distinctions between good and evil, and crime and punishment, are challenged at every turn. The
ensemble cast of The Wire: The Complete First Season is headed by Dominic West and also
includes John Doman, Idris Elba, Frankie R. Faison, Larry Gilliard, Jr., Wood Harris, Domenick
Lombardozzi, Deidre Lovejoy, Wendell Pierce, Lance Reddick, Andre Royo, Sonja Sohn, J.D. Williams
and Seth Williams.
Critical Acclaim
Winner of a Peabody Award in 2004, THE WIRE has been called "astounding" (USA Today) and
"brilliant" (The Cleveland Plain Dealer). "Intriguing...strong acting, fine writing, intensity, grit and
enough cultural resonance to make your ears ring" (The Baltimore Sun) THE WIRE is "engrossing
and unpredictable. The game being played in THE WIRE is a deadly and fascinating one, instantly making
the summer season more interesting" (TV Guide).
Additional DVD Content
The special features exclusive to The Wire: The Complete First Season DVD are audio
commentaries delivered by creator/writer David Simon (Episodes 1 and 12), director Clark Johnson
(Episode 2) and writer George Pelecanos (Episode 12). Additional features include previews and recaps of
each episode.
Marketing and Advertising
The Wire: The Complete First Season on HBO Video is backed by an extensive national
advertising campaign promoting the October 12 release.
Program Information
A Baltimore-based journalist and the author of two nonfiction books about the culture of crime and drugs,
David Simon is the creator of the series, as well as a writer and executive producer. Simon wrote the story
for THE WIRE with Edward Burns, a retired Baltimore homicide detective and schoolteacher who was a
lead investigator on a number of major prosecutions of the most violent drug crews in Baltimore. Simon
and Burns, who co-authored the book The Corner together in 1993, drew on their experiences as
investigator and reporter, with many incidents, characters and scenes in The Wire: The Complete First
Season suggested by actual cases.
Simon served with David Mills and Robert F. Colesberry as executive producers of the HBO miniseries
The Corner, which won Emmys® for best miniseries, writing (Simon and Mills) and
directing (Charles S. Dutton). Colesberry is an executive producer and Nina Kostroff Noble, who also
produced The Corner, is producer of THE WIRE. Directors of THE WIRE include Clark Johnson,
Peter Medak, Clement Virgo, Ed Bianchi, Joe Chappelle, Milcho Manchevski, Brad Anderson, Tim Van
Patten and Steve Shill.
