Song Title: Fast Train
Artist: Solomon Burke

Originally, Leyh and editor Thom Zimny presented this season-ending montage to David Simon with 'Voodoo Chile' by Jimi Hendrix backing the scene. "He wasn't convinced. We didn't throw it out immediately; it was sort of still on the table under consideration," says Leyh, who had already dismissed Neil Young's 'Needle and the Damage Done' for speaking too directly about the show's themes. But when the Hendrix estate wouldn't grant rights to 'Voodoo Chile' because of the portrayals of drug use on 'The Wire,' Leyh decided on a cue that fit in all the right ways: "'Fast Train' is a Van Morrison song sung by Solomon Burke," he says. "It has layers of meaning that you don't get from an original version of the song. And the metaphor of the train cropped up a lot in The Wire, particularly in Season 3, the idea of a slow train coming and how that relates to the idea of reform. So, whenever you hear trains or people mention trains on 'The Wire,' something else is going on. And also, just the meter of the song. It has a melancholy that really works well over the scenes of closure and the court scenes."
