My father (still living) was a gunner mate on multiple ships in the South Pacific from 1942 through 1945. Soloman Islands through Okinawa. Like many survivors, never shared stories (kinda unwritten not to ask dad about the war). Basically humbled by surviving the experience. Now in his late 80's he does open up a little bit, and I make sure to soak it all in. Less than 10% of active veterans of the era are still amongst us - very blessed.
