My Father, Howard Elbert, of Pittsburgh PA, enlisted in the USMC in January, 1942. He was in the 1st Division, 5th Marines, 1st. Battal. He served at Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester and Peleliu. He was wounded on Sept. 28, 1944 on Peleliu. He suffered a bayonet wound in a hand to hand fight with a Jap, in which he killed the Jap. He received the Purple Heart in hospital at New Caledonia. He was discharged in September of 1945 as a Corporal.
