For my Father The battle of Iwo Jima Black Sand Carve these words in stone he said; To die in battle may be better than to not. For peace comes quickly for the dead. But the living with dark dreams in hand... Fear to sleep.. for fear to crawl again. Through blood and death.. and black sand. David D Jerald October 2000 Horace Thompson Jerald Born July 14, 1922 Company A 9th Regiment 1st Battalion 19th Engineers 3rd Marine Division My Dad is still alive and kicking, he lives in Tucson Arizona. I'm so proud of him. I hope who ever reads this knows what a great generation he came from. He is part of only a few Marines left alive who fought on Iwo Jima and lives to tell the tale. He wrote a story about a dog he found on Iwo Jima during the battle. It was to large to put in here. After spending over 40 days on that Island he carried that dog off Iwo Jima in his arms and no one stopped him. God bless him and all the rest who served there. David D Jerald
