Synopsis
Katie visits Rita and finds out her friend is getting a divorce from her husband, Dan. Katie tries to talk Rita out of it, but shes made up her mind. Rita also says that shed shot down Dans desire to have another baby a few years ago because shed wanted to leave. "Youre making a huge mistake," Katie tells her. That night after dinner, Katie loads the dishwasher and feels out Dave, searching for the reason why he doesnt want another baby. "Were getting old," he tells her, not sure where this is coming from. When he shows up to their therapy appointment the next day, Katie is inexplicably missing, but May invites him in alone. After some nervous soul-searching, Dave confesses, "One night I looked over, and I didnt want her. And I didnt know what to do." When he asks if their sex life can come back, May tells him, "There can be something else – something better." That night, when Katie comes home from shopping and a job interview, Dave asks why she left him hanging – and why didnt she tell him about Rita and Dan? "If they can do that," Katie says, unnerved, "then anyone can."
Jamie explains to May how Nick keeps saying, "I love you," and she cant bring herself to reciprocate. Jamie says that normally shed just lie and say she loves him – then cheat on him, leave him and meet someone else. But shes trying to change. May thinks shes exploring valid issues and advises Jamie to spend some time by herself – and consider telling Nick the truth about her feelings. Jamie takes the suggestion, explaining to Nick that things are moving too fast for her, which he takes as rejection. "Im falling in love with you, and youre not falling in love with me," he says before leaving. She tries to stop him, telling him that he's everything she wants. "Oh f**k you," he says.
Palek goes with Carolyn to her first ultrasound and, when the doctors finished, declines a photo of the unborn baby. Carolyn jumps in to ask for a copy and tells Palek, "No one expects you to fall in love with a grain of rice. Give it time." Carolyn also wants to share the news with Paleks mother, but when they go over to visit her, he dumps the information unceremoniously into their conversation. When he leaves the room, Carolyn tells her mother-in-law that Palek doesnt want the baby and isnt happy about it. "He doesnt have a choice," she tells Carolyn. "Hell come around." Back at work, Carolyns boss wants her to work late to fix a screw-up at the firm. Carolyn says she needs more time, and when her boss wont allow it, quits her job impulsively and walks out. She calls Palek at work to tell him, and after he leaves for the day, matters get worse. Meeting with the buyer of their house, Palek finds out hes going to lose $50k in the sale because of mold contamination. He steps outside for some air, and all the stress induces a panic attack, landing him in the hospital. Afterward, when he and Carolyn meet with May to discuss their accumulating problems, Palek tells her, "I cant be a good husband and a good father. I dont have it in me." He wants to separate.
