Synopsis
Carolyn wakes Palek up to thank him for supporting her artificial insemination, and soon enough, they're visiting the fertility specialist for the procedure. A few days later, Palek walks in on Carolyn thoughtfully touching her breasts. "They feel different," she tells him. Over the next few days, she peruses pregnancy websites, eventually testing out these new waters by telling the woman who runs the lunch cart at her office that she's pregnant, whether it's true or not. Palek, meanwhile, starts noting the difficulties of fatherhood, first observing a harried father while shopping, then shutting out his own absentee father, who's been trying to contact him. "Next time you feel an urge to talk to me, deal with it," Palek tells him. "Because I did." When Carolyn receives a negative result from her home pregnancy test, she keeps taking them, one after another. When she runs out of test sticks, she sends Palek to the pharmacy for more. Once those prove negative, Palek suggests she get a blood test. "No," she tells him. "I'm done. I'm not, I can't ... I can't do it anymore."
When Dave rushes in at the last minute to join Katie's next therapy session, she visibly brightens. "We've done everything together," Dave tells May. "I don't want her doing this alone." Commending Dave for coming back, May suggests that he and Katie put a lock on their door and practice spending some time alone. Resistant to the idea of locking their kids out, Katie and Dave both protest. "You've devoted 11 years to your children," May tells them. "Give your each other a half an hour a day." Dave installs the lock, but when Katie falls asleep on the couch one night, he finds a different purpose for it. Covering her with a blanket, he heads to the bedroom, locks the door and masturbates. Afterward, he falls asleep, and when Katie wakes up and finds herself locked out of the bedroom, she's upset that he left her on the couch. They end up sharing a kiss but it turns out to be so awkward and passionless that it leaves the two wondering "why is this so hard?" when it used to not be.
May and Arthur, laughing while they try to move their bed across the room, end up discussing John again. Arthur asks her how her lunch with him went and says he wants the whole situation to be over with. May assures him it is. "It'll never happen again," she tells him. "I've heard that before, May," he replies.
Jamie, after shooting Nick down once, meets him for a drink that leads back to her apartment for coffee, which never gets made. They make out on her couch, almost having sex, but Jamie grows preoccupied. Nick stops, asking her, "Are you not into this?" He slides to the floor, pulls his pants up and leaves, but the next day, Jamie shows up at his softball game at the park. Nick lends her a glove so she can join in, but after the game, he leaves the field without her. When she calls him, he explains that they're both still hung up on their exes and shouldn't get involved with each other.
