Synopsis
Edgy with anticipation, Carolyn takes a pregnancy test right in a pharmacy bathroom, and when the stick doesn't register as positive, she flies into a frustrated rage, ripping a paper-towel dispenser from the wall. That night, she tells Palek she had an abortion when she was in college and though nothing's physically wrong with her, she can't shake the feeling that the universe is punishing her. The next day, she meets her old college boyfriend for coffee, asking him whether he thinks they made a mistake. "We were kids," he tells her. "We did the right thing."
Carolyn's annoyed when Palek skips their therapy session and avoids her calls about it. Her therapist appears unmoved: "It's very hard when you shut people out and then ask them to be with you." Once Carolyn and Palek reconnect that evening, she tells him she's made an appointment for in vitro fertilization.
As Dave and Katie get the kids ready for school, he surprises her by saying he'll meet her at May's office later that morning. After some uncomfortable silences during the session with Dave trying to be supportive but not knowing how to act Katie talks about the sexual cues she had been offering on their anniversary. Dave, feeling pressured, finally erupts: "You know what else turns me on? Buying Cheerios, getting shoe laces, fantasizing about minivans... Then after all that, then I am ready to have sex because all that is so hot." Katie flinches, telling him, "Our entire life that's what you just trashed." Later, he calls to apologize, but Katie, who is with the kids being checked for lice, tells him, "It's ok. It's true." That night, in bed, she says she wishes they hadn't had kids so quickly and had left more time for themselves in the beginning. Then she asks Dave if he's still attracted to her. "Oh, honey...yes" he says, wrapping his arms around her with evident love.
Jamie continues to struggle in the wake of her breakup with Hugo. Some flirting with another cook at her restaurant ends in a quickie on the kitchen's prep table, but later, when she meets Nick, who just broke up with one of her coworkers, Jamie shrugs off his advances, telling him, "I'm f**king toxic, ok? I'm a mess. I'm doing you a favor." Jamie eventually shows up in May's office, explaining the situation with Hugo and saying that she's been in therapy before for "defining myself by sex." May asks whether Jamie's ever actually been monogamous, to which she replies, "No."
