Synopsis
Palek packs his bags to move out, and Carolyn stands in his way, blocking the door. "You're worse than your father," she tells him. "You're a f**king coward." He leaves to stay at his mother's house and later visits Nate to have a beer. When Nate advises him to give it some time, Palek replies, "I've had time. I spent a year wading through it." He meets Carolyn at May's office for a session so his wife can tell him that he'll have nothing to do with the baby. "It won't be your child," she says. "It'll hate you." That night, she comes over to apologize for the comment and tells Palek she loves him. He feels the same way he says, "but that has nothing to do with this." She disagrees and leaves, but later, when she goes to her OB/GYN because of cramps, she calls Palek at the doctor's request. When he arrives, they find out she's lost the baby, and Carolyn, shocked, says to Palek, "You're only here because it's gone...Just leave." But Palek stays to take her home, and later, lies behind his wife on the bed, comforting her.
Jamie, while stopping at a gas station, spots Hugo filling his car outside. Both pretend not to notice each other, but then Hugo calls Jamie on her cell phone, breaking their awkward silence. When Jamie meets with May for a session, all she can talk about is Hugo and how fate seems to have brought them together at the same gas station where they broke up. Later, he calls Jamie at work, asking if he can come in and meet her for dinner. They quickly reconnect, and Hugo tells Jamie that he heard how she slept with a cook at the restaurant. "I had to do it before you did," she says, but then he says he hasn't been with anyone since their breakup. After dinner, they linger outside her apartment, and with much force of will, Jamie goes inside alone. That night, Hugo tells her over the phone how he felt the first time they had sex, that he'd never felt that way before. As the momentum bringing them back together increases, Jamie asks, "What if I destroy us?" Hugo relies, "It's better than the alternative." The next day, they walk into a wedding chapel with $250 and walk out as husband and wife.
Arthur urges May to take a long-discussed vacation, adding that her patients can live without her for a week, when the phone rings. It's John's daughter, Olivia, and she's calling to tell May that John died of a heart attack. In tears, May offers her condolences and leans on Arthur for support. "I led him on," she says, feeling guilty. "I kept it going for myself. I didn't need to do that." When they come home from the funeral, John pours her a drink and hands her a copy of her book, which just arrived. The dedication reads, "To Arthur for listening and to the men and women who have the courage to be happy."
Katie and Dave, whose tense silence at home has grown enough to attract their daughter's attention, meet Dan for dinner to talk about his divorce. "I'm not the one who wanted out," he tells them. During the meal, Katie keeps looking over at Jamie and Hugo, who happen to be eating at a nearby table. Later, in their session with May, Katie gives an idea as to why: "I'm old. I don't recognize my body. I don't know who I am when I go out and men see me ...or don't see me." She feels like she and Dave don't even know each other no wonder they can't have sex. "Someone once told my husband and me," May says, "that no one else could be in our relationship. And also that we had to find the courage to be happy." That night, Katie tells Dave that she wishes they'd never started therapy, and the conversation quickly becomes an argument. When Katie all but dares Dave to leave her, he snaps, "F*ck you!" She leaves the room, and after a few minutes of struggling with his frustration, Dave follows her, walks up to her and kisses her passionately. They move into the bedroom, where she nervously pulls off her shirt and climbs into his lap. He grabs her hand and places it inside her pants, and after a few minutes reaches into his own. It's not quite sex, but they're turned on by each other, together.
