Scott Brosius Interview (part 1)

Former third baseman for the New York Yankees talks about the emotional roller coaster ride of the 2001 post season.

HBO: After 9/11, what was it like to be a New York Yankee?

Scott Brosius: It was amazing to see the transformation because for the rest of that year anyway we weren't the hated Yankees. I mean it was as we were the symbol for these people in New York going through this. You know everybody at that time was just feeling real vulnerable. That something just happened that shook us all. And so everywhere we went it did change. Every single day it was just an amazing sense of patriotism at the park.

We certainly felt that the longer we could extend the season, the better it was going to be for the city. I don't know if it was more pressure or not. But there was certainly a sense that we really wanted to win more.

HBO: What was going through your mind during the first round of the 2001 play offs, down two games against a tough Oakland team?

Scott Brosius: One thing I'll never forget is leaving the stadium and to me it just sums up what New Yorkers are all about. Because when we were leaving the stadium down two to nothing heading out to Oakland, there were people lined up like they always are and every single person said we'll see you back here for game five. Everyone. There was just never the sense of doom. And there's never the sense that it's over.

There've been some pretty electric times in the ballpark but those play offs were by far the most electric that I ever felt. Game five I remember being on second base after Soriano had gotten a hit. Put us ahead in the game. And second base is shaking. The place was sold out. The ground was literally shaking.

HBO: How emotional was it at Yankee stadium during these post season games?

Scott Brosius: Especially during the play-offs, every day at the stadium was just an emotional roller coaster. It was an exciting time. People were just loving it, and at the same time before the game and after the game we were meeting fire fighters' families, and kids of pilots killed in the crash. And so you're crying five minutes before a game starts.

In some ways it was a sanctuary where you could go. For me the ballpark at that point was the one place where I could just kind of go play, forget about it and hang with my friends on the team. Go play and kind of face real life when it's over.

HBO: What it was like when President Bush came out to throw the first pitch during game three of the World Series at Yankee Stadium?

Scott Brosius: I remember thinking the President's here? That's cool. I just thought it was just a courageous move, to walk into the heart of this whole thing in front of all these people. It was just great. So, it was exciting. Emotional, also, because again we had the fire fighters and the police and the rescuers out there as well. Just an extremely emotional time.
