INTERVIEWS
Vincent Pastore

"He doesn't want Joey to go down the wrong road."

HBO
How does Big Pussy fit into Sopranos®: The Road to Respect™, the game?

PASTORE
Well, Big Pussy, his spirit exists - it always did. We had hints of it on the show and this opens it up even more, that he's in the subconscious of a lot of main players on the show. With the game, he's a big force because we see him but we don't see him. He's there but he's not there. You know? He's just as real as any other character.

HBO
How does Joey fit into all of this?

PASTORE
My son, Joey, is the character the player controls. He's got to do good otherwise he gets whacked and he ends up like me, sleeping with the fishes. The only person who sees me is Joey, almost like in Ghost. The only person who saw her husband was Demi Moore, nobody else saw the guy. But that's usually how it is with a ghost. I got a couple of ghosts right now, but only I can see them, you guys can't see them. I tell Joey what to do, I kind of instruct him, and I try to keep him in the game, keep him alive.

HBO
And as the father/son relationship, it was great listening to the audio reads.

PASTORE
What's good about this game is that I was able to have some closure with my family, which I really wasn't able to do in the series. The last time you saw me I was leaving the house with Silvio and Tony Soprano and my wife was sitting at the coffee table and I never came back. So I never had a chance to say goodbye to my family. There are some very good moments if you make it to the end of the game.

HBO
In the world of the show and the game, how does a character gain respect?

PASTORE
A character gains respect in the game by winning, by staying in the game. Just like life, you gotta stay in the game. Recently I was sick, I got better, I'm in the game, I feel better. It's like anything else, It's like a ball team, you're down, you gotta come back up, you just gotta keep punching away there. They got to go out and they gotta kill people to stay in the game, they gotta do things that some of the characters on the show do.

HBO
Whacking and earning.

PASTORE
Well, you got to earn. There was a remark said by Silvio "if we go to war, the guys gotta go to the mattresses, and the guys ain't going to earn." And that's all about the life. Everybody's got to earn. I mean, you always see a character coming in and giving tribute to Tony, handing him an envelope. That's how these guys earn. So, in the game that's how they're going to earn, too.

HBO
Will Big Pussy help Joey get made?

PASTORE
Oh yeah. There's a couple lines that Pussy says about the mistakes he made. He doesn't want Joey to go down the wrong road. He wants him to be in the family and be respected and probably not make the mistakes that Pussy made. Get back in the game, because it is the life you chose. Then you can go have your macaroni.

HBO
Any advice for game players on how to be made?

PASTORE
Make sure before you go out and play the game, that you get dressed up. I mean, you can't go out, looking like AJ, you know. You gotta dress sharp. You gotta look like Paulie Walnuts. Stay sharp, stay focused and don't let your wife catch you with your gooma.

HBO
Joey Pants was a great character, but he's a murdering, conniving jerk. Nobody liked him-

PASTORE
I don't think when Joey Pants walks down the street anybody calls out his character's name.

HBO
A lot of the game action takes place at Vesuvio's, Satriali's, the Bing, the Casino, those places are such signature locations on the show, what's so special about those locations? How do they make the show and your character will actually appear in the meat locker at Satriali's-

PASTORE
That was funny. I appeared in the meat locker and I talked about the inspector, the air and stuff. There are certain locations on the Sopranos® every week because this is where these guys meet - They meet in the Bada-Bing, they meet at the back of the pork store - outside at the tables, this is where they meet. Some of the great scenes I love that David puts together is when everyone is sitting around just eating a sandwich and they're just talking about something and Tony will get up disgusted and just walk away. That's what they do. Think about it, they wake up in the morning maybe they go down, do a little work out in the gym, they get dressed up, and they go to the, the butcher shop, and they sit in the back and they eat these two feet long wedges. I mean... [LAUGHS] Wonder why they're all getting heavy. You know? That's their life. And then they go home and eat again. And then they go out to dinner. They're always eating, these guys, always eating.

HBO
Eating, whacking, or playing poker.

PASTORE
Yeah, or watching some of the girls at the Bada-Bing.
