INTERVIEWS
Joseph Gannascoli

"You don't get respect, you earn it."

HBO
Why did you want to be a part of the Sopranos® game, Road to Respect™?

GANNASCOLI
I need the money? [LAUGHS] I was thrilled that they asked me to be in it and it sounded like fun. I haven't done any sort of voiceover for games.

HBO
What do you think makes the world of The Sopranos® a good vehicle for a game like this?

GANNASCOLI
Video games are very popular for eighteen to thirty-something year olds. There's card playing in the back of the Bing. There's fights. So I think that this game is a perfect.

HBO
How was it recreating your character in the audio record booth?

GANNASCOLI
It was fun. Those one-liners run quick. I added a few they liked. When I looked at it first, it was like pages and pages and pages of lines, and I thought maybe they were gonna give me a line reading but we just banged it out. It was great.

HBO
Name some lines that you ad-libbed?

GANNASCOLI
Let's see. When I'm in a fight scene and I say, "you hit me, I better not find out about it," that was mine. "It's all over, Dorothy," when I hit someone.

HBO
Do you think they really captured the character of Vito?

GANNASCOLI
Well, there's a tender side to Vito that was on the show that we don't really get to see in the video game, but I'm happy with that. Vito was a mobster so...

HBO
The game is called Sopranos®: Road to Respect™. How do you get respect in the fictional world of The Sopranos?

GANNASCOLI
I don't know if you get respect, you got to earn it. That's something my father told me, a long time ago. You don't get respect, you earn it.

HBO
So how do you earn it, in the world of The Sopranos®?

GANNASCOLI
By showing people what you want done and having the balls to do it.

HBO
Being made is one of the goals of the characters in The Sopranos®. How do the characters decide when someone becomes made?

GANNASCOLI
That's something they gotta earn, too - they're gonna have. First of all, you've gotta know that they're loyal, and that they are willing to do whatever it takes to be part of the family, and put the family first, before their immediate family. They have to be someone you can trust.

HBO
Any advice for the game players on how to get made?

GANNASCOLI
Stay in school.

HBO
[LAUGHS] Be tough?

GANNASCOLI
Be tough, be loyal, don't be a rat - that's number one. I'm very proud of my character, he wasn't a rat. [LAUGHS]

HBO
What's your favorite part of the game? What are the most exciting or interesting parts?

GANNASCOLI
People are gonna be feeling like they're part of The Sopranos®. Dealing with Paulie and Vito and Christopher and Silvio and Tony, they're gonna feel like they're part of the crew.
