"Peter Paul ("Paulie Walnuts") Gualtieri has no known legitimate occupation- he puts "professional investor" on his 1040 form- and no known family except for an aging mother in Toms River that he visits twice a month." |

Records show that he is an only child. His father, Gennaro Gualtieri, has a substantial criminal record. There are also numerous filings of local police visits to the Gualtieri home because of domestic disputes. The senior Mr. Gualtieri apparently used his fists to settle arguments, which is probably why Paulie is almost preternaturally violent.
Paulie has been in trouble since he was nine. Juvenile records show that at that age he deformed a schoolmate with a 32# Louisville Slugger. Apparently the victim made an Italian-American slur. Paulie's been in and out of jail ever since he dropped out of Barringer High School at age 17 and hooked up with Johnny Boy Soprano's crew. Even at that age, he quickly became the family enforcer.
Paulie spent two years in the military and was then "Sectioned 8." His longest stretch behind bars was a nine-year stint at Rahway on a murder conspiracy conviction. Prison reports show that he spent his time reading library books and pumping iron. Rumor has it that he killed an adversary by breaking his neck in the shower, but officials couldn't make the charge stick.
He's very proud of his Neapolitan heritage and very loyal to Tony. Without the crime family he'd be lost. It's his whole world.
He has a violent, impulsive temperament, fed by chronic paranoia. He's a superstitious man. You could see him bringing down the house by annihilating the wrong guy at the wrong time.
UPDATE:
Gualtieri recently did a 4-month hitch in Ohio on a weapons charge. It appears that during that time he had minimal contact with members of the Soprano crew. He did, however, place some collect calls to John Sacramoni, AKA Johnny Sack. What is one of Tony Soprano's oldest capos doing chatting up the competition?. Maybe the apparent ascendance of Moltisanti is making him feel threatened. Money has to figure into it somehow - with these guys it always does. Gualtieri recently placed his mother in Green Grove Retirement Community (the same place where Soprano put his mother) and it isn't cheap. Whatever is going on, this is definitely something for us to pay close attention to.
