"Paulie wont die. He will instead lead to Tony's demise. The Choice between killing Paulie or Chris was already made by Tony. He mistakingly chose to kill the wrong one. The one most loyal to him. He let Paulie live (on the boat) out of "pity", and it's that "pity" which will get Tony in the end."
