After practicing law for two years in New York City, Brooklyn native Terence Winter gave up the courtroom to try his hand at the writers room. In 1991, he moved to Los Angeles, where he began teaching himself screenwriting.
In a few short years, his TV spec scripts earned him a coveted slot in the Warner Brothers' Sitcom Writers Workshop, from which he was chosen to join the writing staff of Fox's "The Great Defender" starring Michael Rispoli. Other jobs quickly followed, with stints on an eclectic group of shows including "The Cosby Mysteries," "Xena: Warrior Princess," "Sister, Sister," "Soldier of Fortune," "Diresta" and "Eddie Murphy's The PJ's."
In 2001, together with Tim Van Patten (shared story) Mr. Winter won both the Writers Guild Award and The Edgar Award for his episode "Pine Barrens," directed by Steve Buscemi. In 2004, he won his first Emmy® for Best Writing in a Drama Series for the episode "Long Term Parking." He took home a second statue that night when The Sopranos was honored as Best Drama, an award he shares with his fellow writers and producers on the show.
In addition to his television work, Mr. Winter has written and/or re-written a number of feature films, which are currently in various stages of development.
Mr. Winter received his B.A. from New York University and a J.D. from St. John's University School of Law. He is a member of the bars of both New York and Connecticut.
