JAMES DUBOIS MARSHALL - retired civil engineer, revered community leader and beloved husband to Stella and father of Josette, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, near his home in Los Angeles. He was 80.
Among his many accomplishments, Mr. Marshall was especially proud of his membership in the first all-black 99th Fighter Squadron known as the Tuskegee Airmen. For his courage in World War II, Mr. Marshall earned a Presidential Distinguished Unit Citation, a Flying Cross and a Bronze Star.
Mr. Marshall was also an active member of the Second Baptist Church of Los Angeles. He helped fund the church's homeless shelter and was instrumental in developing a progressive re-integration program, which included specialty classes, counseling and financial aid to help residents get back on their feet.
Mr. Marshall was loved by all who knew him. Stubborn in his ideals and always true to his word, Mr. Marshall was a lifetime champion of peace and social justice. He will best be remembered for his kindness, generosity and dedication to his family and friends.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Feb. 17 at Fisher & Diaz Funeral Home in Los Angeles. In lieu of flowers, Mr. Marshall has asked that donations be made in his name to the Second Baptist Church, 2412 Griffith Avenue, LA.
