Our homage to The Shining!
From time to time we consult with people who work in the funeral home industry. And somebody told us about how once the drains for the blood and bodily fluids got crossed with pipes for the sprinkler system. And they ended up sprinkling the lawn with unmentionable stuff. Those stories just kind of percolate until we figure out a way to manifest them in the Fisher home.
I realized-I think kind of profoundly-- while I was writing this episode that the house is a character, too. I mean, we've all been in funeral homes, but we haven't all lived in funeral homes. I don't know if I'd ever be able to sleep peacefully, even if I was upstairs.
I don't think the house is voicing an opinion. But metaphorically, it's sort of breaking down, you know. It's not a flawless piece of architecture. Just like the other characters on the show. They all have the potential to spring a leak.
It's always okay for a scene to just exist, but I think we come up with scenes that we think are just crazy, that don't necessarily fit into the theme of the episode. And you know, most of the time we're wrong, and those scenes do end up playing into the theme of the episode or the season.
I think we're not always entirely conscious, but it always happens. People will give us credit for the symbolism or something and I think a good percentage of the time, we weren't even aware that's what we were doing.
I've sort of started to dread going to see my shrink after an episode that I've written airs. I know that he's going to want to talk to me about it, but they don't always represent my pathology. Everyone in the room has their own sort of neuroses. I'm trying to convince my psychiatrist of that.
