Episode 503: Hold My Hand

The mother-daughter showdown between a rebellious Claire and an unsettled Ruth is the result of a long-developing arc, according to writer and producer Nancy Oliver. "It's not a scene that I intellectualized a lot about," she says. "We needed a basic, hardcore confrontation." One sign that her instincts were right: no script adjustments were needed on set. "Franny and Lauren just said, 'We're ready, we're ready,'" Oliver says. "They landed it every take. When that happens, you know you have a pretty solid scene." So what are the emotions that nearly drove the two characters to blows--again? Nancy Oliver takes us Inside the Script.
