Six Feet Under creator Alan Ball says David's scene with his father in "Everyone's Waiting" is part of the character's journey toward self-acceptance. "Ultimately, the dream sequence is him finally realizing, on the deepest level, that the only enemy is himself," he says. The episode, of course, had particular meaning for Ball, who wrote and directed the series finale. "I personally found doing the final episode very, very satisfying," he says. "Instinctively, I found myself mirroring the pilot-repeating shots-- because it felt right that it would be organic and circular. The final chapter takes you back to the beginning. The show started with a death and ends with a birth. It's kind of the opposite of how we live here on the material plane. But birth and death-who really knows how different they are?"
