"It's only a date if we want it to be...do you want it to be?"
When Brenda moved into her new apartment in Echo Park, she was greeted by the music of Scott Joplin played on a French horn. It wasn't a recording; it was coming from Joe, her new neighbor. Tall, shaggy-haired and congenial, Joe makes a living - barely - doing session work. "These days," he explained to Brenda when they first met, "most people prefer a synthesized pseudo-horn by-product to a human."
Joe is genuinely kind and unassuming; he feeds the stray cats in the building - even though he's allergic to them - and took Brenda out for a platonic evening in her new neighborhood. Despite their obvious mutual attraction, Joe accepts Brenda's need to move slowly in forging a new relationship. To Brenda, Joe seems uncomplicated and utterly comfortable in his own skin - maybe the guy she's been looking for.
