"As a child, I played the violin...But when I went to college I had a very cruel roommate who threw the violin from our dormitory window. It was hand-carved by my Uncle Gunther before he died of polio. I gave up the violin altogether and left college to go to mortuary school."
When Fisher & Diaz decided to take on an apprentice, Arthur Martin won out over four other seniors from Cypress Mortuary College. Quiet and polite, Arthur tries hard to meet Federico and the Fishers' expectations. On his first day he arrived early - so early that he had to walk around the block a few times before ringing the doorbell - and paid close attention when Ruth laid out the rules regarding kitchen, bathroom and laundry use.
Orphaned at the age of five (his parents were killed in a fire), Arthur was raised and home-schooled by his Great Aunt Pearl. She instilled in him an old-fashioned formality; he uses a handkerchief instead of tissues and winces at curse words. She also taught him to love music. Something of a composer, he writes electronic pieces using a computer he received as a grant from the Mortuary Musical Association.
Although he appears unemotional, Arthur feels things - especially heartache - deeply. Shortly after coming to Fisher & Diaz, he started a friendship with Ruth that developed into a kind of romance. It ended almost as soon as it started, however, when Ruth became frustrated with Arthur's reluctance to make the relationship sexual. When she asked Arthur whether he'd ever had sex, his reply was, "I think I have...in a sense." Not long after that Ruth married George Sibley. Now Arthur will have to cope with his loss while living under the same roof as the newlyweds.
