Summary: A free-spirited woman (Susan Sarandon) in search of a better life leaves her husband behind in Wisconsin and drives to Los Angeles with her fourteen-year-old daughter Ann (Natalie Portman). Ann suffers through homesickness, embarrassment, cheap motels, extreme poverty and even tragedy...and battles it out with her mother, reaching a higher level of understanding and finding her own path in life.
