Breaking the Story
For more than two years, San Francisco Chronicle reporters
Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams investigated the BALCO sports nutrition center,
Victor Conte, its founder, and Greg Anderson, personal trainer to Barry Bonds. Ultimately
they wrote the book "Game of Shadows," which alleges extensive use of performance-
enhancing drugs by professional sports stars, among other things. Today, Fainaru-Wada
and Williams are on the hot seat as they continue to defy a federal grand jury subpoena
commanding them to testify about how they obtained Barry Bonds' grand jury testimony.
Having been ordered to serve time in jail, the reporters, who are currently free pending
appeal of their sentence, claim they will go to prison rather than reveal their sources.
REAL SPORTS correspondent Bernard Goldberg talks to the controversial journalists.
Interviews also include Phil Bronstein, executive editor of the San Francisco Chronicle;
Harvard Law professor and constitutional scholar Alan Dershowitz; and former assistant
U.S. Attorney Randall Eliason.
