Impossible Choice
Buddy Miley lived in a state of unspeakable horror for more
than half his life. At age 17 he was left a quadriplegic after suffering an injury while
playing quarterback for his Warminster, Pa. high school football team. At the time of the
injury, Buddy's brother Jimmy was only 11 years old, but the two brothers formed an
inseparable bond. For years Jimmy served as his brother's caretaker, often at the
expense of his own life and athletic career. After exhausting every possible effort to cure
his paralysis, Buddy asked his brother to take him one final place - to Dr. Jack Kevorkian,
the suicide doctor. In this REAL SPORTS/Sports Illustrated collaboration, Jimmy Miley
sits down with correspondent Frank Deford to recall the difficult decision to adhere to his
brother's request and discuss his life since then.
