A Game of Years
A convicted murderer is on the mound. The right fielder is
serving 25 years for armed robbery. And the shortstop has a longer rap sheet than stat
sheet. Welcome to San Quentin State Prison, a maximum security prison that
rehabilitates some of its burgeoning population on the baseball field. The California
facility is home to the Pirates and Giants, who compete against local "free" squads in a
35-game season; the Giants wear the donated spring training uniforms of the Bay Area
Giants. Launched in 1994 by the prison chaplain, the program has gained notoriety not
just for its novel approach to reformation, but for its tangible results, with a low number of
baseball-playing alumni returning to San Quentin. The games often showcase an
intriguing mix of individuals, since half the prison's roster is serving time for murder, and
visiting teams include police officers, lawyers and even dot-com millionaires. With the
sole backing of private donors, the San Quentin baseball teams show how felons can
serve time and participate in a unique rehabilitation program, at no additional taxpayer
expense. Bryant Gumbel goes behind prison walls to observe men finding purpose on
the ball field.
