From Glory to Goat
The moment Ryan Leaf was selected second overall in the
1998 NFL draft, he became a household name in a football-crazed country. San Diego
fans anticipated the Chargers' return to greatness, others envisioned the 6'5", 235-pound
quarterback someday receiving a first-ballot induction in Canton, and everyone expected
the Montana native to enjoy a long and successful career. Eight years since his rookie
season, Leaf, now retired, is widely regarded as the biggest NFL draft bust of the last 25
years. The one-time Heisman hopeful and star player at Washington State is on to the
next stage of his life as quarterback coach at West Texas A&M University. In his first
one-on-one sit-down since retiring from the NFL and the Seahawks in 2002, Leaf talks to
correspondent Bernard Goldberg about his fast fall from grace and the lessons he
learned.
