It Was Written
Imagine having all your childhood aspirations come true. For tennis star Maria Sharapova, they did. REAL SPORTS first happened upon the Russian-born phenom in May 2001, when she was enrolled at the Bollettieri Academy in Bradenton, Fla. Sharapova and her gurus calmly predicted a future that included championship trophies and million-dollar endorsement deals to match. That interview captured a remarkably poised teenager whose confident demeanor was outdone only by her commitment to the competitive side of tennis. Now, five years later, the 18-year-old's lofty predictions have become a reality. She is a world champion after winning Wimbledon in 2004, has inked global endorsements with heavyweights like Nike and Canon, and has literally become a household name and face. Correspondent Bernard Goldberg rejoins Sharapova to discuss her evolution from a player with potential to the sport's "It" girl. Interviews include Ted Meekma, Senior Vice President of the IMG Academies as well as Sharapova on the eve of the Australian Open.
