Tragedy to Triumph
Four years have elapsed since Alex Zanardi lost both legs in a horrific CART racing crash in Germany. The injuries sustained by the two-time champion were so severe that his recovery alone was viewed as a triumph. Yet Zanardi treated his condition in a manner consistent with the rest of his impressive career and, with the help of two prosthetic limbs, soon resumed everyday activities like walking, swimming and driving. In 2003 REAL SPORTS found Zanardi remarkably unaffected by his injuries; last August, Zanardi captured the seventh race of the world touring cars championships in his BMW 320i. This month, Bryant Gumbel travels to Italy to catch up with the man who does not know the meaning of the word "quit."
