Legendary Sports Illustrated photographer Neil Leifer has led a storybook professional career. It started in New York City during the 1960s, when pictures taken by the teenage freelance photographer began to appear regularly in major national magazines, including the Saturday Evening Post, Look, LIFE, Newsweek, Time, and, most often, Sports Illustrated. Between 1972 and 1978, Leifer served as a staff photographer at SI and burnished a reputation for taking compelling, extraordinary photographs that told the story of the event. Not one to rest on his laurels, he then became an accomplished writer and published nine books, four of which are collections of his sports photography. His current venture, producing and directing films, is the latest twist to a successful and increasingly diverse career. In collaboration with Sports Illustrated, correspondent Frank Deford tracks Leifer as he completes a year-long project of re-shooting at the venues where he covered major sporting events over the past four decades.
