Mallory Code (revisited).
As a golfer for the University of Florida Lady Gators, Tampa native Mallory Code was in many ways just like 375,000 other student athletes participating under the umbrella of the NCAA. She balanced a rigorous practice schedule with a demanding course load and still found time to enjoy being 19. As profiled by REAL SPORTS in January 2001, however, Code became a leading amateur golfer on scholarship at one of the nation's top college programs while battling cystic fibrosis. Numerous surgeries, insulin pumps and a daily intake of 30 pills were necessary to live and to compete. Despite such diligence, Code's condition took a turn for the worse last year when complications from her cystic fibrosis and acute respiratory distress syndrome forced her to withdraw from school. Since then, her life has been less about golf and more about survival. REAL SPORTS correspondent Mary Carillo revisits this remarkable young woman, who continues to soldier on.
