Baseball's Hotbed
In an update of the 2000 Emmy® -winning segment for Outstanding Sports Journalism, Bernard Goldberg revisits baseball's hotbed, the Dominican Republic. As the 2006 World Baseball Classic approaches, the small Caribbean nation is an early favorite, boasting a lineup that might include Vladimir Guerrero of the Los Angeles Angels, David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez of the Boston Red Sox, Sammy Sosa and Miguel Tejada of the Baltimore Orioles, and Adrian Beltre of the Seattle Mariners. For years, the incredible influx of Dominican-born talent went unchecked. Players routinely fudged their ages; team scouts tried to hide their favorite players; and agents dangled big money in front of kids whose families were mired in poverty. With stricter immigration policies now in place, correspondent Bernard Goldberg takes another look at the Dominican Republic to see what has changed, and what talent remains.
