REAL SPORTS updates its profile of recently vindicated same-sex partners B. Birgit Koebke and Kendall French, who, according to the California Supreme Court, can now golf at the Bernardo Heights Country Club with the same benefits extended to opposite-sex married couples. The ruling reached on Aug. 1, 2005, affirms that businesses must treat gay couples registered under the state's eight-month-old domestic partner law the same as opposite-sex married couples. For Koebke, a member of the San Diego country club since 1986, the ruling marks the first time that her partner Kendall French will be able to access golfing privileges extended to spouses. Bernardo Heights had previously refused to offer such privileges to French, who could play as Koebke's guest only six times per year and at a fee of $70 per round. Armen Keteyian revisits the couple to discuss what the ruling means to their life and the thousands of other Californians it implicates.
