James Brown Bio

A member of the HBO Sports team since 1995 when he joined Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel as a correspondent, James Brown has also served as host for many of the major HBO Pay-Per-View Boxing telecasts, including the memorable 2002 heavyweight title fight between Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson.

Additionally, James Brown is the new host for the CBS NFL TODAY show. He had earned a national reputation for his previous work at FOX SPORTS as host of its engaging NFL on FOX pre-game program for the 12 years. JB is also a partner in the ownership for the Washington Nationals.

The rise in Brown's stock did not go unnoticed as he earned two Sports Emmy Awards as Best Studio host for his FOX NFL SUNDAY work in 1998 and 1999. Also, in 1995, he was the recipient of the prestigious Sportscaster of the Year Award from the Quarterback Club of Washington for "his outstanding contribution to the world of sports."

His busy schedule has also included duties as co-host of America's Black Forum, a syndicated public affairs program and moderator for several PBS roundtables. He completed four years as host of "The James Brown Show" on Sporting News Radio and is currently a contributor to the network with high profile one-on-one interviews.

Brown first joined CBS Sports in 1984 where his duties included co- hosting the NCAA basketball championships, hosting the weekday program during the 1992 Winter Olympics, hosting the Heisman Trophy Award Show, calling play-by-play action for college basketball and NFL coverage, and serving as a reporter for the network's coverage of the NBA Finals. Prior to joining CBS Sports, Brown worked as a sports anchor in Washington, D.C., for WJLA-TV in 1984 and WUSA-TV (1984-90). He served as both a play-by-play announcer and analyst for the NBA's Washington Bullets local television broadcasts (1978-83) and co-hosted two weekly Washington-area sports programs. Brown also hosted a midday program on all-sports radio WTEM in Washington, D.C.

He was an outstanding basketball player at DeMatha High School in Hyattsville, Md., and went on to have a standout collegiate career. Brown achieved All-Ivy League honors in his last three seasons at Harvard University and captained the team in his senior year. He graduated from Harvard in 1973 with a degree in American Government and was then drafted in the fourth round by the NBA's Atlanta Hawks. In 1998, Brown had the distinguished honor of being inducted into Harvard's Sports Hall of Fame.

The community-minded Brown participates in numerous charitable organizations including The Marrow Foundation, Darrell Green's Youth Life Foundation, Ronnie Lott's All Stars Helping Kids and The Fellowship of Christian Athletes and The Niemann Pick Disease Foundation. Brown currently presents motivational speeches to various corporations, including IBM and Amtrak.

Brown was born February 25, 1951, in Washington, D.C. He is married to his wife Dorothy and has one daughter.
