Guests: Actor Martin Short, actor Ben Affleck, and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT). Plus via satellite, journalist Tom Friedman and pollster Frank Luntz.
She's an energy expert like the King of Saudi Arabia is an energy expert. It's by accident of birth and residence, basically. And - and what she's an expert in is, basically, how to distribute the profits from oil. That's all she's an expert in. And this whole mantra, Bill, of "Drill, baby, drill!" has to absolutely go down as the dumbest bumper sticker ever to come up in a campaign. Thomas Friedman
You know, I think that "Joe, the plumber" thing, setting aside the actual Joe, the plumber, who is probably a nice guy and being, you know, eaten alive by the media and all that - but it was an effort to put a kind of, you know, populist face on an elitist policy... and scare folks with that. When, in fact, the history of this country is such that even going back to 1776, it's actually gone the other way: the rich have continued to get richer and the poor have continued to get poorer, and there hasn't been a significant redistribution of income since the Great Depression. Ben Affleck
When you talk about the campaign and you talk about the debate, and you talk about McCain saying that he wants to run a constructive, positive campaign, we should all understand that, as we speak right now, there are robo-calls going out all over this country which, in essence, are saying that U.S. Senator Barack Obama works with terrorists to kill Americans. And this - the implications of that, just think what the implications are. If Obama wins, there are millions of people who are going to believe that there is a terrorist in the White House. And if he loses, there are going to be millions of people who are furious at what McCain did. So, what these guys are doing now is dividing this country in a horrendous way... Bernie Sanders
Bill, we don't...we don't talk about it terribly often. It's something that they don't talk about in Congress, and certainly in the corporate media. But the wealthiest one percent of the population earns more income today than the bottom fifty percent. Top one percent own more wealth than the bottom ninety percent. We have, by far, more inequality, in terms of income and wealth, than any other major country on earth. We have the highest rate of childhood poverty and we have more billionaires. I don't think that's what America is supposed to be about. Bernie Sanders
The thing that always fascinates me is that the right, this group that you're talking about, exactly what you're describing, have claimed Jesus from the beginning. Jesus, the ultimate man of peace, the ultimate giver of "I will you're your brethren." Never would have allowed - if he ever comes back to earth - and I think that he will, although I think he'll stop at the three trillion other planets in the universe who didn't nail him to a cross; he'll probably stop there first. But, if he comes back, he will go to Wall Street; he will throw the sinners out. He will be livid. Martin Short
He said, "No, no, no, ma'am, he's not an Arab." And I thought, oh, this is wonderful; he's repudiating this kind of intolerance, to tell the truth. He said, "No, no, he's not an Arab; he's a good man." What if I said to you ⬠what if somebody said, "I hear he is a Jew." And I said, "No, no, he's not a Jew; he's all right." "I hear the guy is a Catholic." "Catholic?!" "No, no, he's a decent guy. "Arab" and "good person" are not antithetical to one another. This ideal of - there's that prejudice that we've allowed to fester in this campaign where this - we've allowed this idea where - denying the fact that Obama who, yes, is not an Arab nor is he a Muslim, but we've allowed that denial to turn into the acceptance of both of those things as a legitimate slur, is really a problem. Ben Affleck
There is hate out there, and it's often among white guys. And you know why they're angry? They're angry because they're working really hard; their standard of living is going down; they're working really hard and the world is passing them by; and they're not - they don't understand why. And, instead of getting angry at the big-money interests who are sending their jobs abroad or taking away their health insurance, or giving tax breaks to people who don't need it, what the Republicans have successfully done is taken that anger and turned it on gay people, turned it on the abortion issue. Bernie Sanders
I fully accept that. And the public looked at the two individuals. And - and Barack Obama has proven to the American people, which is why I think he does win and it doesn't matter what happens in the next two weeks - Barack Obama has proven to the American people, and particularly to young people, that he is the change that they're looking for. But, I would say this: number one is that they want accountability; that they don't trust - they think that Washington has screwed them, and they think that Wall Street has screwed them. But they're not looking for Democrats to beat up on Republicans. They're not. And they're not looking for Republicans to play the same games that they have in the past. What they want is for everyone to get along. Frank Luntz
Could I read you some of the quotes from the head of the Alaskan Independent Party? Joe Vogler - or, I like to call him "Joe, the secessionist" - he said, "I'm not an - I'm an Alaskan, not an American. I've got no use for America or her damned institutions. The fires of hell are glaciers compared to the hate I have for the American government." And Sarah Palin talked to them in 2006. She said, "I share your party's vision." Where is the Democratic Party making this an issue?! Where is the media making this an issue? Bill Maher
