Synopsis

Rising Star

Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard is one of baseball's brightest young stars. In an era when suspicions of steroid use have tainted many careers, he has excelled on talent alone, quickly becoming one of the game's elite. Howard was named 2005 National League Rookie of the Year, and earned the 2006 National League MVP award after swatting 58 regular-season home runs. Real Sports host Bryant Gumbel goes one-on-one with this dynamic athlete.

Senseless

In the blink of an eye, high school wrestlers A.J. and Corey Detwiler of Perkasie, Pa. watched both their parents die. Their mother Suzanne was shot to death by their father Andrew, and Andrew was killed in self-defense moments later by his youngest son Corey. In this Real Sports/Sports Illustrated collaboration, correspondent Jon Frankel visits these courageous brothers to see how they've dealt with this unimaginable tragedy.

In the Blood

For the Crawford family, calling the shots comes naturally. Brothers Jerry and Joe grew up watching their father "Shag" Crawford call balls and strikes as a Major League Baseball umpire. Aspiring to follow in their father's footsteps, both took to officiating themselves. While Jerry followed his father's path to baseball, Joe reached for a whistle instead, becoming an NBA referee. Real Sports correspondent Mary Carillo profiles this unique family.

Maverick

When Mark Cuban purchased the Dallas Mavericks in Jan. 2000, he was the youngest owner in the NBA at age 42. From the get-go, critics said he was in over his head, an amateur caught up in the boyhood fantasy of owning a big-league ball club. Whether violating NBA rules, spending truckloads of money on lavish extras for his team, or openly criticizing league officials on a regular basis, Cuban did little to allay those fears. To this day, he continues to do things his own way, and his team went all the way to the finals in 2006. Six years since their first interview, Real Sports correspondent Frank Deford reconnects with Cuban.
